Course Description

Course Overview

This 3-day CPD course at Waverley Abbey equips counsellors and psychotherapists to engage with Christian faith, religion, and spirituality in an ethical and professional way within therapeutic practice. The course also provides 18 hours of CPD.

Course Content

There has long been resistance within parts of the counselling profession to integrating Christian faith and spirituality into therapeutic practice. This programme provides a clear framework for doing so in a way that is ethical, professional, and clinically responsible.

Participants explore the history of faith-counselling integration, examine the appropriate and inappropriate use of spiritual interventions, reflect on power and safeguarding, and develop a clear personal philosophy of practice.

The programme is experiential and interactive, supporting thoughtful and responsible integration of faith within clinical contexts.

Assessment

There is an end-of-course assessment to verify learning.

Course Topics

The programme will be experiential, interactive, and—hopefully—fun! You will learn:

  • The history and development of integrating Christian faith, religion, and spirituality with counselling and psychotherapy
  • Ethical principles for the use of spiritual and religious interventions
  • The risks and potential harm of misusing faith-based interventions
  • How to develop a personal counselling philosophy shaped by Christian faith
  • The use and misuse of power in counselling practice

Accessibility Information

Waverley Abbey House is a Grade II listed property. Most courses take place on the first floor, which is accessed by stairs. In the event of a fire, participants need to be able to walk downstairs at an average pace without assistance. Due to the listed status of the building, a lift is not available.

    FAQ: Can I apply if I live abroad?

    Yes, you can apply. Location is not an eligibility issue for applying for our CPD courses, as long as you are able to attend in-person. Please bear in mind the time differences when considering the lecture schedule. Please also be mindful that our counselling training is based on UK legislation and professional practice. If you live in another country you will need to comply with local regulations.
