MA Counselling

The MA Counselling programme enables you to train as a counsellor while studying at postgraduate level. Learning will take place in a lively and supportive context, encouraging your own reflective development. The orientation of the programme is integrative and relational.

Who is the programme for?

 

This programme is suitable for those:

  • From a professional background, including church leadership, pastoral ministry, social work, education and health care
  • Seeking to qualify as a professional counsellor
How is the programme taught?

Year 1 teaching takes place over 2 weeks (Monday to Friday) and five long weekends.

You will also need to achieve 50 hours of clinical practice during the programme.

  • Counselling Theories (including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Psychodynamic and Systemic Therapy)
  • The Waverley Integrative Framework
  • Therapeutic Skills and their Practice
  • Human Development and Psychopathologies
  • Research Methodologies
Where is the programme taught?

Our programmes may be taught at both Waverley Abbey House and Pilgrim Hall.

What are the entry requirements?

 

You will need:

  • A degree in any subject and
  • A certificate counselling.

However, if you have not gained a certificate in counselling, we are able to discuss an alternative entrance pathway through our BA Year 1 programme, at interview.

You will be assessed on your personal and academic suitability for counselling training and for study at Masters level.

 

What are the dates for this programme?

 

The MA Counselling is a two-year, part-time programme, leading to a Postgraduate Diploma/Masters Degree, depending on whether the research module is taken. You may complete this research module in Year 2 or take a further year if it better suits your circumstances.
