Online Open Day
Welcome to Waverley Abbey College, where we offer a choice of part-time programmes in Counselling and Spiritual Formation. Our staff have recorded explanatory videos introducing you to the different areas of the College. You can find information on everything, from the content in our programmes to how to apply for student finance, by clicking the links on the left-hand-side of this page and watching their presentations.
We encourage you to watch all the videos on this page as well as the Finance and Application process pages (approximately 40 minutes in total) and invite you to join our live Q&A sessions.
Why study at Waverley Abbey College?
Bob Stradling, College Director, provides an introduction to the College. With over 25 years’ experience in Higher Education, Bob will convey the values, philosophy and Christian ethos that are at the heart of the College.
Why study Counselling with us?
In this video, Heather Churchill, Head of Counselling Training, discusses how Waverley Abbey College is unique and how we are different from other training providers. She also reflects on why now, more than ever, might be the right time for you to study and equip yourself for helping others.
This is followed by a video from Dr Owen Ashley, who talks about how the Counselling programme can equip you to become a professional counsellor through our unique undergraduate or postgraduate training, and outlines pathways to support on your academic journey.
Why study Spiritual Formation with us?
David Wise, Spiritual Formation Programme Leader, talks about who this course is for and its main objectives. He gives an overview of the study options and subjects covered in each module. He concludes by observing that if you want to see others grow and develop spiritually, and you want to grow and develop yourself, then this is the course for you.
There is no better way for us to measure success of the College than listening to our students. The following short video are a great testimony to the quality of our training.
Heather Churchill has many years of experience as a trainer, counsellor/psychotherapist and a supervisor. She has co-authored two books and published articles, a number of which have appeared in the Accord journal of the Association of Christian Counsellors. In her private clinical practice, Heather specialises in counselling adults who have experienced abuse in childhood. She is currently conducting a reflexive audit on the work she has undertaken in developing Higher Education counselling training within a Christian paradigm at doctoral level.
Dr Owen Ashley worked as a counsellor in general medical practice for many years where he also ran stress management and assertiveness training groups. With more than 30 years’ experience, Owen runs his own counselling and supervision private practice. Stress management and Christian theology/spirituality are particular areas of clinical interest and experience.
David Wise served as a Baptist pastor in churches in and around London for 37 years. David has mentored Christian leaders for more than 20 years and he is accredited by the European Mentoring and Coaching Council as a Senior Practitioner. Between 2011 and 2018 David worked as a part-time tutor and module leader on Masters programmes in Missional Leadership, and is currently researching the creation of genuinely multi-ethnic local church congregations for a Doctorate in Practical Theology.
